Fall is my favorite season! The only downside is that with Fall comes cold & flu season. As a mom of four, I am always concerned about germs that can cause illness. When one gets sick, we all get sick and that is no fun when you have a family of six!
Over the years, I’ve learned about some natural ways to help keep my family healthy during cold & flu season. One of my favorite remedies is Elderberry Syrup.
You can buy elderberry syrup already made, but I do enjoy making it myself with fresh ingredients.
This blend of elderberries, raw honey, cloves, cinnamon, and ginger (not shown) help boost the immune system and shorten the duration of the flu! The honey makes for a sweet syrup that even my kids enjoy. Getting them to take their daily dose is no trouble. I like the recipe found here.
This next remedy is something we have just started using this year. It’s called Fire Cider. I learned about it from some of my doula friends and decided to give it a try. Fire cider is a spicy tonic that is also known to help support the immune system and shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms. With ingredients like garlic, turmeric, honey, peppers, apple cider vinegar and more…..you’re in for a flavorful kick in the mouth.
The fire cider ingredients ferment for one month before being strained. Once strained, you move your liquid to the fridge where it can stay for up to one year. Fire cider can be taken straight like a shot daily, used on salad, or as a delicious marinade. Find the recipe here.
Last on the list is one of my new favorites! PurMist hand sanitizer. I’m sure we all carry around hand sanitizer during cold & flu season. How many of you hate the smell and sticky residue it leaves behind? If you do, PurMist is great for you!
