My family’s homeschooling journey began about 4 years ago when my oldest son turned 5 and it was time to start talking about school. My husband and I had been lucky enough to have never needed daycare. Someone was always able to stay home with our children. So when the time came to discuss sending him to school, we were so anxious. We weren’t ready to trust strangers with our child.
At that point we began to look into the option to homeschool. We homeschooled him and then the next year began homeschooling our second son. We also had another son who was 1 at the time. Another year later, our family was expanding again! I was feeling overwhelmed at the idea of homeschooling two kids and having two other little ones to look after. My husband and I decided to give public school a go. It went well the first year. The second year was…..just ok. There were many things that I didn’t like though.
My two older boys have such different personalities and learn so differently. My oldest is very advanced. He is not being challenged nearly enough. My 6 year old on the other hand is very busy. He has trouble focusing in a large group setting. These two issues in combination with my on call lifestyle as a birth worker just made for the perfect recipe to go back to homeschooling.
Homeschooling allows us to personalize each child’s experience as well as the ability to be flexible. My boys also love that homeschooling is more hands on and fun. We use lots of workbooks and learning tools for our “desk work”, but we get to do so much more!
They love going to the library……
They love that we get to take frequent field trips to the museums, science centers, etc. One of their favorite things though, is using my laptop or their tablets.
We use many online tools to supplement our learning. One of our favorites is an app called CodeSpark Academy. It’s a learning game that teaches kids how to code. When I first let my oldest son play it, I overheard him say to his brother “If this is part of homeschool, I think we can do homeschool forever!”. I couldn’t help but smile (and also laugh lol). CodeSpark offers a 7 day free trial on their site, but if you put in my code “ASHANTI” you will get 30 days to enjoy!
While school may be out for some, we are taking advantage of the perfect season for trips to the zoo, nature trails, and more and using these trips as educational opportunities. Learning never ends. There is always an opportunity to learn something new. Even in summer! I myself am still learning. Especially when it comes to homeschooling.
