9:30AM-10:15AM Celebrating Failure with our Children
Speaker: Christy Malone
No one likes to talk about their failures, but let’s be honest, they end up shaping the person that we are. As a business owner, I’ve failed, as a mom, I’ve failed, as a wife, I’ve failed. It’s what we do with our failures that will determine our eventual success. As a parent, our natural instinct is to shield our child from failure. We don’t want them to experience the emotional pain that we have felt due to our own epic fails. Unfortunately, we won’t always be there to protect them. At some point, they will feel the effects of failure. The question is, “will they know how to respond to it?” In this session, I’ll walk through the benefits of letting our children fail, even at an early age. I’ll discuss the ways to positively encourage your child so they realize that their self-worth is not tied to “what they are good at” or “what they aren’t good at”. Failure should never defeat us; it should only make us stronger. Give your child the tools to learn and grow from their failures, reducing the risk for anxiety and low self-esteem.

Parents tend to be pretty nervous about having “the talk” with their kids, and they also tend to think of it as a one-time deal that happens somewhere between a child asking “Where do babies come from?” and the senior prom. Leslie Dixon, R.N. and founder of The Birds & Bees Connection, believes that The Talk is actually a continuum of conversations that starts when children are very young.

We’ll incorporate deep breathing and movement that will open up the energy centers and allow positive energy to flow. We’ll go over some mantras that mamas can say whenever they feel stressed and will encourage peace and hope. We will discuss pregnancy, birth and parenting after loss. The goal is to offer mamas a space to talk about their experiences and walk away with tools to help them through the anxiety that often comes post loss. 12:25PM-1:20PM Prepare to Push: What Your Pelvic Floor and Abdomen Want You to Know About Pregnancy and Birth
Speaker: Kim Vopni
This session will highlight points from my book of the same title. The pelvic floor and abdomen are two parts of the body that undergo significant change and often do not get the attention they deserve. Women need to get to know their pelvic floor and core on a whole new level and train their bodies for birth. Just like any physical event, birth is something that needs to be trained for and recovered from. The 6 week green light and mommy bootcamp classes are not serving new moms. Let’s prepare women to push and highlight the importance of recovery as well so they can have an empowered birth, a supported recovery and have core confidence for motherhood.

1:30PM-2:15PM Early Nutrition and Babywaering
Speaker: Emily Little, Ph.D.
Breastfeeding is internationally recognized as the optimal nutrition for infant health and development, yet breastfeeding rates in the US do not meet recommended guidelines. Though most breastfeeding support interventions focus on societal-level support and education-based programs, the quality of the mother-infant interaction is equally important in facilitating long-term breastfeeding success. How can close physical contact contribute to more sustainable, challenge-free breastfeeding? This session will showcase emerging research highlighting how increased physical contact — for example, via babywearing — can help mothers reach personal breastfeeding goals and provide optimal nutrition for their baby.
