Let Them Play - Springtime Activities

Children are small for such a short amount of time. I can not stress enough how much I love to watch my kids just be kids and play in the dirt. I have vivid memories of making mud pies, drawing with chalk, and just being outside whenever the weather permitted. Because of this, as we enter springtime each year, I really want my kids to play outside like kids.

Every day this spring, as long as it wasn’t rainy or too cold, we’ve spent hours outside. Whether you’re taking a walk around the block or running around the backyard, there’s just something wonderful about breathing in the spring air after a long winter. Here are my favorite springtime activities for my kids:

Let your kids discover their creative side with some basic sidewalk chalk. Chalk can be super inexpensive and they can have an endless amount of fun with drawing on the sidewalk, patio, driveway, brick, and anything else you’d allow them to draw on! And of course, their canvas can be wiped clean with the rain or water from the garden hose!

While this may not be an option if you’re in a big city (local parks may have an awesome bike path.) One of my favorite activities is going through our parks’ bike paths and observing nature. Some parks will also have different playgrounds to explore along the way!

If a local park isn’t an option or you live in a neighborhood- you can also just go around the block! Exploring your neighborhood together is always super fun as well! Little one too little for riding a bike? Wagons are just as entertaining!

I’ll admit that I am not a huge fan of paint because of the mess that usually comes with it. My children, however, love painting and being creative. One of my favorite things to do is take them outside in play clothes and let them paint. The paint is non-toxic and sometimes it’s even homemade! They have fun painting and the only mess I have to clean up afterwards is them! Nothing a little bath can’t handle!

Even if you don’t have a green thumb, kids love planting flowers, vegetables, herbs, etc. If it can be planted and grown, kids love to take the time and watch plants sprout! (As long as they can understand a little bit of patience!) Starting with something simple in a small flower pot can be exciting and can be even more exciting if you can plant it in the ground after watching it sprout!

Neighborhood Stroll.

Winter can be so hard on everyone in the family. Kids need to be able to run and play and it can be so difficult during the cold winter months inside. Taking a walk around the block can give you a fresh breath of outside air but can also get you outside conversing with your neighbors! If you have a lot of dandelions in your neighborhood- maybe grab a little cup or bag. Kids love picking dandelions along the way to take home!

Kids love having picnics! There’s just something about sitting on the ground with a blanket with food…. Even if your outdoor picnic plans get ruined from spring’s silly weather, you can always improvise and have an indoor picnic in your living room! Simple works with kids so don’t overthink it. It’s an adventure to eat without a table! Spring weather on your side? Maybe you can take your picnic to a local park! Then the kids can play at the playground and get worn out for a nice spring nap!

It’s so important to get outside and play, especially when the spring air is still light and refreshing! Open your windows, listen to the birds sing and enjoy this beautiful spring season! What are your favorite spring activities to do with your kids or as a family?
