1:45PM-2:45PM Sexual Trauma and the Breastfeeding Mother
Speaker: Brandy Watson
Sexual trauma has molded cultural norms in breastfeeding. With 1 in 5 girls being a victim of sexual abuse, it has become a serious roadblock in the initiation of breastfeeding and the success of breastfeeding mothers. Victims are groomed by their abusers and are subject to emotionally controlling techniques that often times cause immense guilt and shame in the victim, which often times leads to an inability to breastfeed due to psychological factors stemming from the abuse. However, current research has shown that breastfeeding can actually be a healing experience and may enhance the mother/baby bond, create a sense of validation in the mother, and helps to allow for a sense of exposure and control in the mother. We look at multiple sources of peer-reviewed research to determine how to help mothers who have experienced sexual abuse and trauma to overcome the anxiety of breastfeeding.
