I remember them like yesterday. Those sweet, surreal moments I held each of our sweet babies in my arms for the very first time. How I instantly realized that I would do anything to keep them safe and protected. Then just like that we brought them home and then I blinked and they were each six months old and transitioning from co-sleeping to their own beds. We bought all the softest sheets and made sure the room was dark and cozy for them, just like we were told to do. However, the one piece we overlooked for many years was what they were sleeping on. We spent countless hours researching everything from baby gear to car seats to homemade baby food, but finding a mattress was something where we just strolled into the store and bought whatever was on sale without a second glance.
Recently, I have become aware of just how big of a decision buying the right mattress for our little ones should have been. Many mattresses are manufactured with toxic chemicals which strongly emit harmful VOCs (the same chemicals found in household cleaners and paint). Babies and toddlers spend anywhere from 8-15 hours a day sleeping, which to me means that purchasing a safe and non-toxic mattress should be one of the most important decisions I can make as a parent and well worth a financial investment.
Thankfully, there are companies like Naturepedic that are working diligently to provide safe and healthy sleep solutions for families. One of their products is The Ultra Breathable 2-Stage Organic Crib Mattress, which we recently welcomed into our home. As soon as I unboxed this mattress, it was clear that the quality and design was far superior to any crib mattress I had ever seen. The mattress has a firm and seamless design with square corners (nice snug crib fit) and a completely waterproof surface (see my “waterproof test” image below).
On top of the mattress is a pad. Let me just be clear that this is no ordinary mattress pad. This pad is as luxurious, soft and safe as you could imagine for your little one. It features an intricate quilted design that allows for maximum breathability which reduces overheating. Personally, I’m a little envious of the handcrafted beauty and quality of this pad and want one for my own bed.
Another thoughtful feature is that the mattress is two-sided. There is a firmer side for infants and a slightly softer side for toddlers making it versatile and the only crib mattress you’ll ever have to purchase for your little one. As I said earlier, investing in safe sleep for our little ones is a priority for us, so it’s great to know that this will last for years to come and our money will go extremely far with this investment.
Now, we’ve talked about everything you can see on the outside, but let’s talk about the really critical features of this mattress, what’s on the inside. The inside features a combination of Naturepedic’s patented wavesupport™ technology, made from pure food-grade polyethylene and U.S. grown and certified organic cotton filling. Worried about allergens? The mattress features a built-in dust mite/bed bug barrier as well as it is free of any latex or soy materials.
Before I move on to the “toddler bedtime test”, I just want to highlight that all of the Naturepedic products are handcrafted by skilled Amish workers right here in the U.S.A.
Time for the “toddler bedtime test!” Our sweet girl is not the best sleeper and I’ve suspected on and off for years that the mattress she has been sleeping on had something to do with it. You see, she’s the third born in four years and that means she received our son’s hand-me-down mattress that was already four years old when she was born and not the best quality to begin with. I was really excited to show her this mattress and as soon as I put it down, she could hardly stop herself from laying on it. She was elated at her new bed and couldn’t wait to give it a try. Her first night was a SUCCESS and I can happily say she is definitely sleeping sounder since. In fact, she has slept an additional hour and throughout the night, EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, since we switched to this mattress.
Based on how this mattress is built, I strongly believe that it feels as close as you can get to sleeping on a cloud and the best #safehealthysleep I could ever give her! There is no doubt in my mind that this mattress has greatly improved her quality of sleep. And as her mom, it’s reassuring to know that she’s sleeping on a healthy and safe surface. Happy sleeping toddler = happy sleeping mama!
